Next Step in Care: Family Caregivers & Health Care Professionals Working Together

For Health Care Providers

The First Step in Care

One of the most important transitions that family members make when taking care of a seriously or chronically ill person is seeing themselves not just as a daughter, son, spouse, or friend but also as a caregiver.  You can use this guide to help caregivers to identify themselves in this role.  This guide highlights some reasons why it is important to do so.

Intended for both new and experienced caregivers, the guide offers nine practical first steps new caregivers should take and advice for pacing themselves for the long term.

The First Step in Care: Becoming a Family Caregiver

Effectively helping a new caregiver to get started can be challenging, especially since this is often in a crisis. This video demonstrates how a staff member, in just a few minutes, can use Next Step in Care materials to guide a family caregiver into managing the crisis and communicating with the health care providers to the benefit of all - the patient, the family caregiver, and the providers involved.
